Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, a fierce critic of Donald Trump’s, announced on Tuesday that he will not be seeking reelection after accusations surfaced that he sexually abused teenage boys decades ago.
Fox News reported that Murray had been campaigning for reelection, but he dropped out today after a fourth accuser came forward to accuse the 62-year-old of paying him for sex when he was a teenager decades ago. The victim claimed he was introduced to the future mayor by Delvonn Heckard, who filed a lawsuit last month claiming he was sexually abused by Murray in the 1980s when Heckard was a teenager. Two other men have hurled similar accusations at Murray.
“It tears me to pieces to step away but I believe it’s in the best interest of this city that I love,” the disgraced mayor said.
Murray had been a state lawmaker for 18 years when he was elected as Seattle’s mayor in 2013. He was a frequent critic of President Trump, recently announcing Seattle was challenging Trump’s order to withhold federal money from so-called “sanctuary cities.”
He had been the favorite to win reelection until the claims against him surfaced.
