FLOTUS Meets With Prince Harry Marking the Start of the Invictus Games In Canada

First Lady Melania Trump began her first solo trip since she stepped into the White House Saturday. She met with Britain’s Prince Harry in Toronto marking the opening of the Invictus Games, an Olympic style competition for men and women of the armed services who got injured while serving in the military.

“She feels strongly that they — and their families — should be honored every day,” Trump’s communications director Stephanie Grisham said, adding that the first lady has “great admiration for the role the games have played in empowering those who have been injured while serving.”

For the trip, the first lady wore a checkered black and white suit with culotte-style pants and her trademark stiletto heels.

“In just two short years, the Invictus Games have allowed thousands of injured and wounded servicemen and women from many different countries to participate in adaptive sports competitions — something that should be lauded and supported worldwide. I am honored by the opportunity to represent our country at this year’s games,” Trump said in July in a statement about the trip.

While in Toronto for the event’s opening ceremonies, Melania Trump will meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

About 550 athletes, including 100 Americans, will compete. Seventeen nations are represented at the Invictus Games, which were created by Prince Harry.

“We’re using the Games to get out of dark holes and back into life — and without Harry, we wouldn’t be here having fun and enjoying the camaraderie, which is what you miss from the army days,” said Charlie Walker, a coach of the United Kingdom’s sitting volleyball team.

Canadian Melanie Harris, who will compete in bioarchery, suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after two tours in Afghanistan.

“I was living without passion, without purpose. I needed to believe in myself again and I needed to be inspired. And these Invictus Games that’s what they did,” she said.

VA Secretary David Shulkin, Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, Gold Star mother Karen Kelly, professional golfer Nancy Lopez and entertainer Wayne Newton also attended the opening ceremonies of the Invictus Games in Toronto.

The coming week will see the Prince attend all sporting events, supporting the athletes he has come to know through his work with Invictus in recent years.
